Métro stands for Métropolitain and RER for Réseau
Express Régional.
The metro has almost a century of history (it opened on July 19 th 1900).
The system is vast and effective. Its first line was Porte de Vincennes
to Porte Maillot (line n°1). Fulgence Bienvenüe was the engineer
in charge of the construction and the architect Hector Guimard was responsible
for the "Art Nouveau" entrances which you can see an example of
at Abesses station.
The system has 199 km (124 miles) of tracks and 14 lines (numbered 1 trough
14), which runs in downtown Paris. There are 368 stations (not including
RER stations), 87 of these being interchanges between lines.
6 million passengers are transported by 3500 cars everyday, so that you
can imagine what a powerful network it is (this network is managed by the
RATP Company). When discussing a location, Parisians always mention the
name of the nearest Metro station. It is the easiest and fastest mean of
transportation, even if you are new to Paris.
The RER has 4 lines lettered A trough D and runs trough both downtown and
the suburbs (included Airports, see below "Links Paris Airports").
